Clinton, NIS Committee Member 2 June 1959 Department of State Chairman, NIS Committee — i20 Palmyra Island, Kingman Reef, Jobnston Island, Sead leland, Midway Islands 1 Recent decision of the NIS Committee (refer Item 5 NCM 286) to discontinue NIS production on NIS 98 (Hawaitan Islands) poses # question as to disposition of the subject islands, They are part of the NIS Area but are not included in the Hawaiian Statehood Act, 2. Since Palmyra lland and Kingman Reef are essentially a continuation of the Line lslasds included in NIS 103, it seems advisable to include them i this ares. 3. Johnston Inland, Sand Island, and the Midway Islands, howsver, are situated between the new State of Hawail and the U.S. Trust Territory (NIS 101) to the west, and it would seem preferable in view of their location to laclude these three islands in that area. 4. 1 would appreciate your iaformal views on this matter before proposing it formally to the NIS Committee.
