Dear Friend and =olleague,
As you are no doubt aware, Robert =ood Johnson Foundation is working with the Program in Placebo Studies to educate
the medical =ommunity about placebo effects. =/span>With their funding, we are planning a series of public forums,
the first of which =akes place this June 19th and 20th and which will feature Fabrizio Benedetti, =or Wager and Predrag
Petrovic. ./span>ln addition to two public talks, we decided to capitalize on our guests' =resence by also having a small
seminar that will enable what we hope will be a unique exchange. Our plan is to =ave a private (by invitation only)
discussion on the topic "what we don't<=u> know about placebo effects." Seats are scarce. It will =ake place in the
Minot Room on the 5th floor of the Countway Medical Library at Harvard on Thursday, June =0th. We are inviting =bout
20 researchers engaged with placebo issues (and certain other interested parties) to attend =his seminar. We hope you
will =oin us. In addition to =ocal people there will be representatives from around the United States and Europe. David
Jones, MD, PhD, Harvard =ckerman Professor of Culture in Medicine, a psychiatrist and historian, will be =he
moderator/facilitator.
The format we are =lanning consists of three sessions and several breaks.
1. First =ession (1.5 hours): =/span>Panel discussion between Fabrizio, Tor and Predrag along with several other senior
researchers including Frank =iller, Irving Kirsch and a clinical researcher or two. They will engage in a discussion of "what
don't =e know about placebo?" We want to give the =anelists time to interact, develop the theme and drill deeply.
2. =/span>Coffee break: 15 minutes
3. =/span>Second session (1.25 hours): Participants are invited to ask questions and interact with the panel.
4. Lunch break: lhour — lunch will be provided
5. Third session: (1.5 hours): A round table discussion with everyone participating.
6. Round up: (15 minutes)
Please RSVP to =eborah Grose at dgrose@bidmc.harvard.edu =or me (ted_kaptchuk@hms.harvard.edu<=a>) as soon as
you know whether you will be able to attend. Attached is an information sheet with all the relevant =etails. I look
forward to =eeing you and talking about the unknown.
