When the Nile perch was introduced into Lake Victoria 50 years ago to boost national
fisheries, the highly predatory fish decimated smaller native fish populations,
including local favorites like the African carp. As the smaller fish disappeared, so too,
did the major source of protein for millions of people living along the lake's shore.
To combat this problem, researchers at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem worked
with a local university in Uganda to spawn several species of African carp in fish farms.
These locally owned fish farms then stocked newly built ponds in small villages around
the lake.
The project was so successful that now four large fish farms, whose owners trained in

Israel, produce enough fish to populate even more small ponds around the lake.
Today, thanks to HU, villagers use sustainable aquaculture to produce and provide
food for their local communities.
We invite you to learn more about how Hebrew University's research is improving lives
— and to make a gift to AFHU to enable more advancements in sustainability.
