Tues 7th Nov, 7pm, Emmanuel Centre
Speakers
Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce, captured the world's
attention in 2015 when she revealed that she is a transgender
woman. On June 1 that year she appeared on the cover of Vanity
Fair. That image, in which she unveiled her new name and look,
drew more than 9 million unique visitors to Vanity Fair's website in
a single day, a record for the site.
In recent years, there has been a revolution in how people think
and talk about gender and sexuality, with many, particularly the
young. declaring themselves gender-fluid. Jenner now stands at
the heart of that revolution as the most famous transgender
woman in the world, who has talked and written with impressive
candour about the inner conflict she experienced growing up in an
era of rigidly defined gender identities. In her earlier identity as
Bruce Jenner, she won gold for the United States in the 1976
Olympic Games decathlon, earning the accolade of the World's
Greatest Athlete'. She then became arguably the world's most
famous father as the patriarch of the Kardashian family, in the
massive hit reality show 'Keeping up with the Kardashians'. a
phenomenon which has redefined celebrity culture.
Jenner's life past and present has not been without its ironies.
Hailed by an entire nation as the ultimate symbol of manhood, she
felt that she was living a lie. And now, post-transition, she is
regarded by many as a figurehead for the transgender community.
Her memoir. Secrets of My Life, which charts her journey from
shame and deceit to self-realisation, was a Sunday limes
bestseller earlier this year.
Join us on November 7th when Jenner comes to the Intelligence
Squared stage to tell her story and explain how, after her long
struggle, she now feels she is living her true self, while keeping
allegiance with her past.
