I think what they said makes sense (our curator was quite concerned about extensive travel given the fragile nature of the sculpture, as was Leon), but I'm running it past Leon who is apparently already on a plane and so won't be available to comment until tomorrow. I'll let you know what he says and please let me know if Jeffrey feels strongly about Hong Kong. My personal feeling is that as long as the right people see it in London, bringing it physically to Hong Kong doesn't matter and probably isn't worth the risk. Amy Cappellazzo at Sotheby's also asked me about the status of the contract. I assume Darren is reviewing it? Thanks! Heather Dear Leon, I just spoke with Amy Cappellazzo about travel for the Giacometti. She and the Sotheby's team feel that exhibiting the work in Hong Kong does not capture any additional clients and is inadvisable given the fragile nature of the work. Amy spoke with her Hong Kong colleagues over the weekend and they told her that the 4-5 clients who they expect to bid on the Giacometti have all told Sotheby's that they will be in London during the exhibition there. The current plan, then, is to bring the Giacometti to New York now so that it will be on view this weekend and through the sales next week and then to take it to London. I told Amy I thought it would be fine with you for the Giacometti not to travel to Hong Kong given this information, but if you would like it to go to Hong Kong anyway, please let me know.
