Most cases of Lyme disease are by a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb), which is carried by deer ticks. Many doctors don't realize that these ticks may carry numerous microbes in addition to Bb, making Lyme disease one of the most complex, multi-layered infectious diseases ever described. Deer ticks may carry species of Borrelia other than Bb, which cause chronic illness but are not detected by the standard diagnostic tests for Lyme. They may carry other dangerous bacteria, like Anaplasma and Bartonella, which cause distinct patterns of illness and suppress immunity. They may carry blood-borne parasites like Babesia and filaria, which do not respond to antibiotics.
