From: How To Academy < To: j <jeevacation@gmail.com> Subject: New Events. Douglas Hurd on the Queen. How the French Think. Great Explorers- Alexander von Humboldt and Ranulph Fiennes. Ways to Change the World. Date: Tue, 18 Aug 2015 08:46:03 +0000 How to: Autumn Programme 03.11.2015 Evening Event, 6:30pm - 7:45pm how to: Explore (The story of one of the world's greatest Explorers — Alexander Von Humboldt) with Andrea Wulf Special Travel & Science Evening. Tickets are only £15 and include a copy of the EFTA01191657 book - RRP £25. Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) is one of the greatest but least well-known explorers and scientists: more things are named after him than anyone else. There are towns, rivers, mountain ranges, the ocean current that runs along the South American coast, there's a penguin, a giant squid — even the Mare Humboldtianum on the moon. His colourful adventures read like something out of a Boy's Own story: Humboldt explored deep into the rainforest, climbed the world's highest volcanoes and inspired princes and presidents, scientists and poets alike. Napoleon was jealous of him; Simon Bolivar's revolution was fuelled by his ideas; Darwin set sail on the Beagle because of Humboldt; and Jules Verne's Captain Nemo owned all his many books. He simply was, as one contemporary put it, 'the greatest man since the Deluge'. Taking us on a fantastic voyage in his footsteps — racing across anthrax-infected Russia or mapping tropical rivers alive with crocodiles — Andrea Wulf's talk will show why his life and ideas remain so important today. Humboldt predicted human-induced climate change as early as 1800, and The Invention of Nature traces his ideas as they go on to revolutionize and shape science, conservation, nature writing, politics, art and the theory of evolution. He wanted to know and understand everything and his way of thinking was so far ahead of his time that it's only coming into its own now. Alexander von Humboldt really did invent the way we see nature. EFTA01191658 AUTUMN HIGHLIGHTS EFTA01191659 29.09.2015 how to: Understand the Universe with Carlo Rovelli Join us for an unmissable lunchtime talk by Carlo Rovelli, the author of the bestselling Seven Brief Lessons on Physics: an 80 page book on physics written for readers that know little or nothing about the subject which has now sold over 300,000 copies. For this talk, not in 80 pages but in less than hour, Professor Rovelli will explain in simple terms some of Einstein's theory of general relativity, quantum mechanics, black holes, the complex architecture of the universe, elementary particles, gravity and the nature of the mind. The strangeness, the mysteries, the poetry, and especially the intense beauty of the world described today by physics will be entertainingly revealed and you will be able to wonder at the bending of space, the slowing of time, the wavy nature of matter, the quanta of space. the vastness of the cosmos, and the mysterious relation between heat and time. Ranulph Fiennes was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE). One of Britain's most famous explorers, he has raised over £14 million for charity and was named Best Sportsman in the 2007 ITV Great Briton Awards. We will also journey with him to the Tibetan border in search of a magnolia and to Eastern Patagonia to see the last remaining giants of the Monkey Puzzle tree, to Tibet's Tsango Gorge which yields more than 100 bags of seeds, including the Tibetan golden oak, the Tsango cypress and blue-stemmed maples. Codes and Guerrillas. Max Hastings will talk about the espionage and intelligence machines of all sides in World War II, and the impact of spies, code•breakers and partisan operations on events. The talk will also touch on other less well known tales of high courage ashore, at sea and in the air such as womanising Richard Sorge pretending to be a committed Nazi whilst spying for the Soviet Union from the German embassy in Tokyo. and Joseph Rochefort, the awkward, overlooked US naval intelligence officer who in a moment of inspiration became the man who won the battle of Midway. For an evening full of high policy, human drama, treachery. guerrilla warfare, ciphers. clandestine meetings in cafes, and wireless operators tapping out messages across the airwaves, this is the talk to come to.
