Shade Houses

Specifications
Roof
It can be flat, gabled, or rounded.
Shade Cloth
Green is most preferred among gardeners/growers. Black allows more light but traps heat which can
stunt growth. White is cooler. A striped "reflective" fabric of thinly striped black and white is also an
option. Other colors are also sometimes available.
Shade Percentage of Shade Cloth
Overall, 50% is probably the most versatile shading percentage and most commonly used for
gardeners.
Vegetables grow best in 30 - 50%
Plants tend to prefer 40-60%
For orchids or ferns, 75% or higher is recommended
Size
The entire space in Pop's Garden where the shade house is to be located is 21' x 32', wall to wall.
To leave approximately 3 feet on each side, the structure needs to be about 15' x 26'.
Several standardized sizes are available. They tend to by 8' to 10' wide and 20' to 24' deep.
Floor
An earthen floor is probably coolest. Whatever is chosen, it will need to drain well.
Openings and Doors
Having it enclosed helps with parasites and grazers.
Gaps or openings are helpful for air flow, however.
A double opening is wise if growing larger items (such as a banana tree, for example).

Positioning
North to South positioning will provide the most even sun exposure.
Frame
Aluminum, Steel, and Galvanized Steel seem to be standard. Wood is also an option but requires
more maintenance.
A protective paint on steel every three to four years will increase longevity.
One expert recommended at least 16 gauge for the frame.
Posts can be set into the ground or set in cement.

Some say this (above) helps reduce heat while allowing photosynthesis. Black fabric increases heat
by up to 30% which can stress and consequently slow plant growth despite light exposure. Green
fabric is most commonly used and is cooler than black.
