Last week for the first time in the history of the Mayo Clinic a physician with no affiliation to an academic medical center gave grand rounds to 1200 physicians to explain how we developed a new business model to take an idea and do a scientific study and then produce a product with no NIH funding and no institutional funding. To make this even more meaningful we did the study which normally would take three years and cost several million dollars in funding for 150,000 dollars and completed it in one year with a licensed income producing products. we also came up with a novel new way of doing future projects: anyone can submit a proposal in the mayo Clinic system we will have BREF rate their proposal with 2 categories; one the quality of the science the second the probability of having a marketable product. We will provide 150,000. If the project is successful and provides a revenue source the money goes back to BREF to invest in another project and we receive part of the licensing fee.
